Virginia Catalyst Announces COVID-19 Grant Funding

RICHMOND, VA – January 28, 2021  – The Virginia Catalyst, also known as the Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), today announced that it is conducting a formalized, competitive, one-time COVID-19 Therapeutic Drug Grant Funding Round of up to $5,000,000 to:
  • Support the acceleration of clinical testing by one or more Virginia companies of a therapeutic drug that treats life-threatening symptoms caused by COVID-19
  • Encourage collaborative partnerships between investigators at one or more Virginia research universities and each grant recipient
  • Increase Virginia’s national and global competitiveness in the life sciences by creating critical mass through collaborations between and among Virginia’s research universities and industry partners
  • Create investment or jobs in Virginia
The Catalyst is now accepting applications for this special COVID-19 Grant Round.

Virginia Catalyst Announces $2.1 Million Awarded

RICHMOND, VA – October 26, 2020 – The Virginia Catalyst today announced that it has awarded $2.1 million in grants to three life and bioscience projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia. These grants, which will be met with significant matching funds from partner companies, were awarded as Round 11 of Virginia Catalyst’s ongoing mission to stimulate economic development by promoting collaborative projects that address large, unmet needs for improving human health, and that can create high-paying jobs in the Commonwealth.

Round 11 of grant funding project winners:
Project: Clinical Translation of a Male Contraceptive Procedure
  • Company: Contraline, Inc. (Charlottesville, VA)
  • University collaborators: University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Funding amount: $600,000
Project: Treating chronic Disease Caused by Microbiome Dysbiosis
  • Company: ISOThrive, Inc. (Manassas, VA)
  • University collaborators: George Mason University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and University of Virginia
  • Funding amount: $800,000
Project: Innovative Bioanalytical Instrument for Improving Drug Discovery
  • Company: Meru Biotechnologies (Richmond, VA)
  • University collaborators: Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University
  • Funding amount: $700,000

Emphasis will be placed on Innovative Projects Focused on Solutions for COVID-19 and other Infectious Disease

RICHMOND, VA – April 1, 2020 – The Virginia Catalyst, formerly known as the Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), today announced that it is accepting letters of intent (LOI) for Grant Round 11 to fund the development and commercialization of life science projects that address major unmet needs for improving human health and advancing Virginia’s economy.
 
While all life science projects will be accepted for Grant Round 11, given the impact of COVID-19, emphasis will be placed on projects within the areas of infectious disease, immunology, vaccine and drug discovery, and innovative service delivery models including telehealth and telemedicine.

Virginia Catalyst Announces Grant Round 9 Awarded Projects

RICHMOND, VA – June 4, 2019 – The Virginia Catalyst, formerly known as the Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), today announced that it has awarded $2.1 million in grants to four life and bioscience projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia. These grants, which will be met with nearly $3.2 million in matching funds from partner companies, were awarded as Round 9 of Virginia Catalyst’s ongoing mission to stimulate economic development by promoting collaborative projects that address large, unmet needs for improving human health, and that can create high-paying jobs in the Commonwealth.

“As national and global leaders in life sciences, Virginia’s research universities continue to foster collaborations, to combine their intellectual and scientific expertise with industry to achieve meaningful results,” said Mike Grisham, CEO, Virginia Catalyst. “We are excited to continue our mission of supporting collaborations in Virginia’s biosciences. The critical mass achieved by these collaborations provides Virginia with competitive advantages over other states and has resulted in significant outside capital being invested in Virginia to finance the commercialization of Virginia’s innovations, while creating high-paying jobs for the Commonwealth.”
 
Through this ninth round of funding, Virginia Catalyst has awarded 31 grants totaling over $15.9 million, resulting in a combined $33.4 million in matching funds and an additional $138 million in follow-on funding.

RICHMOND, VA – April 15, 2019 – The Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), now known as Virginia Catalyst, today announced that it is accepting applications/letters of intent (LOIs) for round ten of grants to fund the development and commercialization of life science projects that address major unmet needs for improving human health and advance Virginia’s economy.
 
Virginia Catalyst awards these funds to help accelerate translational research and the commercialization of Virginia’s innovations. The awards, which range from $200,000 to $800,000, help fund collaborative efforts between industry and Virginia research universities with the goal of:
 
  • Funding innovative, collaborative, translational research projects that elevate the level of sponsored research at Virginia’s universities and have the potential to create high value jobs in the Commonwealth
  • Accelerating commercialization of Virginia research university inventions and discoveries and to achieve competitive critical mass through robust collaborations of Virginia
 
Letters of intent (LOI) must be received by July 10, 2019 at 5:00 PM EDT. Projects that meet criteria will be invited to submit a full application by August 28, 2019.

Virginia Catalyst Announces Luncheon to Discuss National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Funding Opportunities

RICHMOND, VA – January 15, 2019 – The Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), now known as Virginia Catalyst, today announced that it is hosting a luncheon, in conjunction with Virginia Bio and CIT, featuring the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, and Deloitte Consulting. As part of the event, scheduled for January 23 from 11:30am-1:00pm, NIDA's Victor Prikhodko, Business Advisor to the Office of Translational Initiatives and Program Innovations (OTIPI), will discuss NIDA SBIR’s funding opportunities, including the recently released “HEAL Initiative: America’s Startups and Small Businesses Build Technologies to Stop the Opioid Crisis” RFA, and present some best practices for strong applications. In addition, Jon Baba, a Principal in Deloitte’s Global Public Sector Practice, will discuss Deloitte’s findings and strategic recommendations for neuroscience and addiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Virginia Catalyst recently engaged Deloitte Consulting to explore and validate Virginia’s unmet addiction needs and benchmark Virginia’s competitive strengths and resources, and this presentation will unveil those findings.

Virginia Catalyst Announces $2.7 Million in Grants to Fund Collaborative Bioscience Research Initiatives

Six winning projects to address human health needs such as myocardial infarctions, traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal injury and catheter associated infections

The Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation (VBHRC), now known as Virginia Catalyst, today announced that it has awarded a total of $2.7 million to six life and bioscience projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia. These grants, which will be met with nearly $5.7 million in matching funds from partner companies, were awarded as Round 8 of Virginia Catalyst’s ongoing mission to stimulate economic development by promoting collaborative projects that address large, unmet medical needs, and that can create high-paying jobs in the Commonwealth.
 
“With this eighth round of funding, Virginia Catalyst has now awarded $15.7 million to Virginia companies and universities working on incredible technologies that can benefit the whole of society,” said Mike Grisham, CEO of Virginia Catalyst. “These six projects embody Virginia Catalyst’s core mission in that not only can they help citizens in our state, and our country, treat diseases and to discover new forms of treatment, but they can also help keep Virginia’s economy moving forward.”

Virginia Catalyst Awards $500,000 to Help Diagnose Brain Injuries

The Virginia Biosciences Health Research Corporation, known as Virginia Catalyst, today announced that it has awarded a $500,000 grant to a collaborative bioscience commercialization project including a team from the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, the University of Virginia, Carilion Medical Center, and BRAINBox Solutions, Inc., which is headquartered in Richmond. This grant, which includes matching funding of $500,000 provided by BRAINBox, will support the Virginia Brain Injury Diagnosis and Monitoring Initiative. This work will focus on a multi-modality system approach which will include point-of-care device detection of testing for brain injury blood biomarkers and development of integrated neuro-imaging, behavioral and biomarker models for outcome prediction for athletic brain injury and general brain injury management.
